1.Flood
作不可數名詞，意為“洪水”，以它作主語(yǔ)時(shí)，謂語(yǔ)動(dòng)詞用單數形式。
e.g.
1.There was a serious flood here last month. 上個(gè)月這里發(fā)了一次大洪水。
2.To prepare for the flood, Noah made a large ship of wood. 為了給這次洪水做準備，諾亞做了一艘大木船。
句中的to prepare for the flood 是動(dòng)詞不定式短語(yǔ)用在句首作狀語(yǔ)，表示目的，它也可用在動(dòng)詞后；短語(yǔ) prepare for則表示“為……做準備”，與get ready for同義。
e.g.Lisa is leading a happy life now.
麗薩正過(guò)著(zhù)幸福的生活。

[辨析]: except, but, besides
(1) except 意為 “除……之外（不再有）”，指從整體所接的人或物，前面常有 all, every, any, no 等詞。
(2) but 意為 “除……之外”，常與有否定意思的詞連用。當but 前有實(shí)義動(dòng)詞 do 時(shí)，but 后接動(dòng)詞原形。but 作為副詞時(shí)同 only，意思是 “不過(guò)；只”。
(3) besides 意思是 “除了……之外（還有）”，它的意思是在原來(lái)的基礎上加上 besides 除外的人或物，其前常有 other, another, others, a few 等詞。
