1. In the early twentieth, people suffered through many wars.
20世紀初，人們在很多戰爭中受苦受難。
suffer為動(dòng)詞，意為“患有(疾病等)；經(jīng)受”，常與from搭配構成suffer from ...，意為“受(某種病痛)折磨；因……而受苦”。
e.g. The patient is still suffering.
病人仍很痛苦。
I am suffering from a headache.
我正在遭受頭痛之苦。
They suffered from a serious flood last year.
去年他們遭受一場(chǎng)大水災。
through的意思是“在整個(gè)……期間；從頭至尾”。
e.g. He studied his project through the night.
他研究他的課題研究了一整夜。

我要把這本小說(shuō)從頭至尾看一遍。
2. The headquarters of the UN is in New York City.
聯(lián)合國總部位于紐約市。

這樣的詞還有means（方法，手段）, works（工廠(chǎng)）, species（種類(lèi)）, series（系列）, barracks（營(yíng)房）等。
其后動(dòng)詞的單復數形式取決于這些名

賓語(yǔ)從句
用作賓語(yǔ)的從句叫做賓語(yǔ)從句。
一、引導詞
1. 由that引導的賓語(yǔ)從句。that在句中只起連接作用，沒(méi)有實(shí)際意義，也不在從句中充當任何成分，that在口語(yǔ)中常省略。
2. 由whether或if引導的賓語(yǔ)從句。
whether和if都有“是否”的意思，不能省略。
3. 由who，what，which，how，
when，where，why等引導的賓語(yǔ)從句。這些詞在賓語(yǔ)從句中有其本身的含義，并充當一定的成分，不能省略。
二、語(yǔ)序
賓語(yǔ)從句要用陳述句語(yǔ)序。
三、時(shí)態(tài)
1. 如果主句是一般現在時(shí)，賓語(yǔ)從句可用各種時(shí)態(tài)；如果主句是一般過(guò)去時(shí)，從句也常用相應的過(guò)去時(shí)態(tài)。
2. 賓語(yǔ)從句表示客觀(guān)事實(shí)或真理時(shí)，其時(shí)態(tài)不受主句限制，需用一般現在時(shí)。
